Donna E. Walker Tileston: What Every Teacher Should Know About Special Learners

What Every Teacher Should Know About Special Learners

Description

This is a guide for teachers that will help them to identify special programmes, the laws that govern those programmes, and how children benefit from special programme services. The book provides information about programmes for gifted, handicapped, and learning disabled students. It covers disorders and tools to help students with disorders achieve school success; modification of various needs in the classroom; incorporation of gifted strategies into classrooms of all populations; and more.

Shifting seamlessly from the past to the present and following the routes of escape across countries and continents, Munoz Molina evokes people real and imagined who come together in a richly allusive pattern--from Eugenia Ginsburg to Grete Buber-Neumann, the one on a Better Anal Sex - 27 Essential Anal Sex Tips You Must Know for Ultimate Fun & Pleasure download ebook train to the gulag, the other heading toward a Nazi concentration camp; from a shoemaker and a nun who become lovers in a small Spanish town to Primo Levi bound for Auschwitz. From the well known to the virtually unknown--all of Molina's characters are voices of separation, nostalgia, love, and endless waiting. "Michel Leiris is the author of the most significant and arresting work of autobiography to have been written in the twentieth century."--John Sturrock "For me his work is not only a document that enriches our knowledge of man, but also a personal testament that touches me deeply."--Francis Bacon ' Scratches' is the first volume in Michel Leiris's monumental four-volume autobiography, 'Rules of the Game.' In this volume, the celebrated French writer examines his inventory of memories, explores the language of his childhood, weaves anecdotes from his private life with his old and recent ideas. In the end, he so mercilessly scrutinizes what was familiar that its familiarity drops away and it blossoms into something exotic. As Leiris recollects his childhood, his father's recording machine becomes a miraculous object and the letters of the alphabet--from A (or the double ladder of a house painter) to I (a soldier standing at attention) to X (the cross one makes on something whose secret one will never penetrate)--come magically to life.

Articles of Faith : A Frontline History of the Abortion Wars

Description

Nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, Articles of Faith is a powerful exploration of one of the most divisive issues in our recent political history, and the only book to portray the passion of both sides of the abortion conflict. Drawing from more than five hundred interviews as well as previously unseen archival material, Cynthia Gorney has written a compelling narrative that explores the years between Roe v. Wade (1973) and William L. Webster v. Reproductive Health Services (1989), the first case to challenge the Roe decision before an anti-Roe court. Meet Judith Widdicombe, the registered nurse who runs the abortion underground in 1960s St. Louis and then the first legal clinic after Roe v. Wade. And meet Samuel Lee, a young pacifist and would-be seminarian whose provocative abortion bill becomes the centerpiece of William L. Webster v. Reproductive Health Services. The Supreme Court case brings the two advocates head-to-head.

The Role of Central Conceptual Structures in the Development of Children's Thought

Description

This monograph presents a theory of conceptual development, the main construct of which is the "central conceptual structure". These structures are defined as networks of semantic nodes and relations which represent children's core knowledge and which can be applied to a full range of tasks in a given domain. Comprehensive cross-cultural testing of model structures and a six-year programme of instructional research show how the transformation of these central conceptual structures have a powerful influence on subsequent knowledge acquisition. The work should interest cognitive scientists, educational psychologists and child development specialists.

Fredric Jameson: A Singular Modernity: Essay on the Ontology of the Present

A Singular Modernity: Essay on the Ontology of the Present

Description

The concepts of modernity and modernism are amongst the most controversial and vigorously debated in contemporary philosophy and cultural theory. In this intervention, Fredric Jameson perhaps the most influential and persuasive theorist of postmodernity excavates and explores these notions in a fresh and illuminating manner. The extraordinary revival of discussions of modernity, as well as of new theories of artistic modernism, demands attention in its own right. It seems clear that the (provisional) disappearance of alternatives to capitalism plays its part in the universal attempt to revive modernity as a social ideal. Yet the paradoxes of the concept illustrate its legitimate history and suggest some rules for avoiding its misuse as well. In this major interpretation of the problematic, Jameson concludes that both concepts are tainted, but nonetheless yield clues as to the nature of the phenomena they purported to theorize. His judicious and vigilant probing of both terms which can probably not be banished at this late date helps us clarify our present political and artistic situations."

"Traveler, Cleric, Witch."The villagers in the sleepy hamlet of Lychford are divided. A supermarket wants to build a major branch on their border. Some welcome the employment opportunities, while some object to the modernization of the local environment.Judith Mawson (local crank) knows the truth -- that Lychford lies on the boundary between two worlds, and that the destruction of the border will open wide the gateways to malevolent beings beyond imagination. But if she is to have her voice heard, she's going to need the assistance of some unlikely allies...PRAISE FOR Paul Cornell's "THE WITCHES OF LYCHFORD""At once epic and terribly intimate. This is the story of a village, not a city, and all the more powerful for that; not all big fantasy A Singular Modernity: Essay on the Ontology of the Present download PDF needs an urban setting. Beautifully written, perfectly cruel, and ultimately kind. This is Cornell at the height of his craft." Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author of the InCryptid and October Daye series"Rich in charm... local politics and witchcraft writ small and personal, but large in consequence. [Cornell] adeptly describes the emotion of magic; its effects and internal ignition of wonder. The feel of being exposed to magic for the first time and the feel of doing magic and having it done to you have never been better described in any story." Bill Willingham, author of "Fables" and "Down the Mysterly River""Masterfully creepy and sinister, all the more so for taking place in the beautifully drawn English countryside." Jenny Colgan, author of "Doctor Who: Into the Nowhere""

Reiner Stach,Shelley Frisch: Kafka: The Early Years

Kafka: The Early Years

Description

How did Kafka become Kafka? This eagerly anticipated third and final volume of Reiner Stach's definitive biography of the writer answers that question with more facts and insight than ever before, describing the complex personal, political, and cultural circumstances that shaped the young Franz Kafka (1883-1924). It tells the story of the years from his birth in Prague to the beginning of his professional and literary career in 1910, taking the reader up to just before the breakthrough that resulted in his first masterpieces, including "The Metamorphosis." Brimming with vivid and often startling details, Stach's narrative invites readers deep inside this neglected period of Kafka's life. The book's richly atmospheric portrait of his German Jewish merchant family and his education, psychological development, and sexual maturation draws on numerous sources, some still unpublished, including family letters, schoolmates' memoirs, and early diaries of his close friend Max Brod. The biography also provides a colorful panorama of Kafka's wider world, especially the convoluted politics and culture of Prague. Before World War I, Kafka lived in a society at the threshold of modernity but torn by conflict, and Stach provides poignant details of how the adolescent Kafka witnessed violent outbreaks of anti-Semitism and nationalism. The reader also learns how he developed a passionate interest in new technologies, particularly movies and airplanes, and why another interest--his predilection for the back-to-nature movement--stemmed from his "nervous" surroundings rather than personal eccentricity. The crowning volume to a masterly biography, this is an unmatched account of how a boy who grew up in an old Central European monarchy became a writer who helped create modern literature.

Romeo and Juliet: Quick Text

Description

This is the full play in quick modern English for a fast-paced read! 'But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east and Juliet is the sun'! This title presents the tragic tale of doomed love, set in Verona, Italy, where the Montagues and the Capulets constantly feud and bring unrest to the city. So how could love possibly survive between this pair of star-crossed lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet? Only Shakespeare could take such a romantic story and turn it into a soul-searching tragedy.

When Chicago detective Alec Buchanan is offered a prime position with the FBI, it is the perfect opportunity to leave the Windy City and follow in his brothers' footsteps to the top echelons of law enforcement. But first he must complete one last assignment (and one that he is not too happy about): acting as a glorified bodyguard to hotel heiress Regan Hamilton Madison. The gorgeous exec has become entangled in some potentially deadly business. Someone has e-mailed her a graphic crime-scene photo-and the victim is no stranger. Inspired by the traditional Mediterranean way of eating ("pesce" is the Italian word for "fish," and "pesca" is Spanish for "fishing," thus the alternate spelling "pescatarian"), veteran nutritionist Janis Jibrin, M.S., R.D., offers step-by-step portion- and meal-planning instructions, includinga wide variety of quick and easybreakfast, lunch, and dinner recipes to help you meet your weight-loss and health goals. She shares her deep knowledge of the science behind the healthiest diet on the planet, deftly explaining the amazing potential benefits of eating the pescetarian way--including whittling your Romeo and Juliet: Quick Text download ebook waist, reducing chronic inflammation, preventing arterial plaque, and possibly warding off Alzheimer's. She also breaks down the latest information about mercury, overfishing, and the environmental impact of your ingredient choices.

Paul Lynch: Red Sky in Morning

Red Sky in Morning

Description

Spring 1832: Donegal, north west Ireland. Coll Coyle wakes to a blood dawn and a day he does not want to face. The young father stands to lose everything on account of the cruel intentions of his landowner's heedless son. Although reluctant, Coll sets out to confront his trouble. And so begins his fall from the rainsoaked, cloud-swirling Eden, and a pursuit across the wild bog lands of Donegal. Behind him is John Faller - a man who has vowed to hunt Coll to the ends of the earth - in a pursuit that will stretch to an epic voyage across the Atlantic, and to greater tragedy in the new American frontier. Red Sky in Morning is a dark tale of oppression bathed in sparkling, unconstrained imagery. A compassionate and sensitive exploration of the merciless side of man and the indifference of nature, it is both a mesmerizing feat of imagination and a landmark piece of fiction.

Professor and Vice President for Research Bruno Latour,Professor Catherine Porter,Catharine Porter: We Have Never Been Modern

We Have Never Been Modern

Description

With the rise of science, we moderns believe, the world changed irrevocably, separating us forever from our primitive, premodern ancestors. But if we were to let go of this fond conviction, Bruno Latour asks, what would the world look like? His book, an anthropology of science, shows us how much of modernity is actually a matter of faith. What does it mean to be modern? What difference does the scientific method make? The difference, Latour explains, is in our careful distinctions between nature and society, between human and thing, distinctions that our benighted ancestors, in their world of alchemy, astrology, and phrenology, never made. But alongside this purifying practice that defines modernity, there exists another seemingly contrary one: the construction of systems that mix politics, science, technology, and nature. The ozone debate is such a hybrid, in Latour s analysis, as are global warming, deforestation, even the idea of black holes. As these hybrids proliferate, the prospect of keeping nature and culture in their separate mental chambers becomes overwhelming and rather than try, Latour suggests, we should rethink our distinctions, rethink the definition and constitution of modernity itself. His book offers a new explanation of science that finally recognizes the connections between nature and culture and so, between our culture and others, past and present. Nothing short of a reworking of our mental landscape. "We Have Never Been Modern" blurs the boundaries among science, the humanities, and the social sciences to enhance understanding on all sides. A summation of the work of one of the most influential and provocative interpreters of science, it aims at saving what is good and valuable in modernity and replacing the rest with a broader, fairer, and finer sense of possibility."
